Masons Trainings

Masons training is one of the prime target areas in the DRM programme. This training with the side-by-side construction will provide intensive practical knowledge to the rural masons as well as the common people. This is an effort to sensitize rural masons particularly to earthquake resistance masonry building construction in rather easier and practical manner. It will also produce a live Earthquake resistance demo unit.

Considering the above facts place Collectorate Campus was selected for this training as many people visit the place daily. The demo unit which will be constructed here can be used for the updation of knowledge of not only the common people but also the masons.

This will be the first mason training under DRM program and in the coming months the same example can be replicated in the Tehsils Headquarters also

Mock-Drills-

Mock-drills help in evaluating response and improving coordination within various government departments, non-government agencies and communities. They help in identifying the extent to which the SOPs and Plans are effective and also aid in revising these if required.  These drills enhance the ability to respond faster, better and in an organized manner during the response and recovery phase.

Drills/Simulations/Exercises are based on a set of assumptions about the circumstances during a disaster:

  •  A high level of tension and anxiety under which the concerned personnel would operate both at the central and field levels

  • §         Highly unreliable information which requires critical assessment

  • §         Criticality of time where rapid decisions must be taken

  • §         Necessity for coordination among technical personnel and government officers, who do not usually interact

  • §         Prominence of political and social factors in the aftermath of a disaster

Village Level Training -

Under the ongoing GoI-UNDP-DRM program Village Level Disaster Management Teams were formed in all the revenue villages of the District Uttarkashi, along with the Village Disaster Management Action Plan (VDMAP). This work was started in  the year 2006 and completed  in June 2007.

The need is felt to bring out those team members from the papers and harness their skills in an effective way as and when required. As we are well aware of the fact that the community is the first responders in any Disasters and if they were equipped with some basic knowledge they will not only help the sufferers but also they will be of great use to the administration.

Schools Tranings-

Children are most vulnerable group in case of disasters be it Earthquake, fire or any other. If earthquake occurs in the day time when the students were inside the classroom the damages can be many times.

Keeping this thing in mind, under the ongoing Disaster Risk Management Program following  activities had been undertaken in the Uttarkashi to spread the awareness among school students.

Patwari/Police/Village Panchayat Development Officers/Teachers Training -

The first one who suffer the misery of any kind of disaster is the local community. The first one who come forward to Search & Rescue of the masses is one from the local community itself .By the time news reached to the administration people started the relief measures from the sources available with them. If there skills were harnessed and the data bank can be made of available resources of each and every villages as a whole and the vulnerable villages on priority. This could of great help not only  to the sufferers but also to the administration.

More actively involvement of vulnerable communities in disaster prone areas in planning and preparation as well as in rebuilding during preparation and rebuilding is essential. Such participation rarely occurs, and yet direct community involvement can improve planning, strengthen ownership of projects, preserve existing social relationships and help families and neighborhoods stay intact.

For this administration must know the vulnerable sites in advance so that the planning can be done in advance to mitigate the effect of Disaster be it in any form. Planning can be done right from the village level. This can be possible only when the administrative officials have the full knowledge of the vulnerable places and which place needs immediate intervention could be well understood if the mapping can be done.
